Skincare Tips for Different Skin Types: Tailoring Your Routine for Optimal Results

Have you ever wondered why your skincare routine just isn’t working for you, even if you seem to be doing everything right?

Maybe you’re using a brand that was recommended by a friend or a magazine, or you’re trying a viral TikTok hack that seems to be working for everyone else.

There are lots of reasons why your skin isn’t taking to your routine, but one of the biggest ones comes down to skin type. Even the most hyped product won’t matter if it’s not created with your skin type in mind.

That’s why we’ll be sharing our top tips for different skin types, so that you can tailor your routine for optimal results. Get ready for your best and most beautiful skin ever!

What Are The Different Skin Types?

Each skin type is linked to the skin’s natural level of sebum production. Sebum is the oily substance that the skin naturally produces to act as a moisturizer and protective barrier.

A person’s sebum levels can be influenced by genetics, hormones, stress, age, and even their environment. Sebum production levels can fluctuate over time, which means that you might not always have the same skin type over the course of your life.

In general, there are 4 main skin types:

  • Oily skin. Your skin produces an excess amount of sebum. It tends to have a shiny appearance and you may feel more prone to breakouts.
  • Dry skin. Your skin produces less sebum than other types of skin. It can appear dull, flaky, and may be more prone to irritation.
  • Combination skin. You have both dry and oily areas. Typically, your t-zone (the area that covers your forehead and nose) gets oily and your cheeks get dry.
  • Normal skin. Your skin produces a balanced level of sebum. You don’t tend to suffer from skincare issues such as acne, oiliness, or irritation.

How To Determine Your Skin Type

Before you can build your perfect skincare routine, you’ll need to know what your skin type is. If you couldn’t identify your skin type above, you can try one of these tests at home:

1. The Face Wash Test

Simply wash your face with a cleanser, and don’t apply any products afterwards. Wait for about half an hour, and observe what your skin looks and feels like.

  • If your skin still appears shiny, you likely have oily skin
  • If your skin feels tight or flaky, you likely have dry skin
  • If your forehead looks shiny but the rest of your face feels fine, you likely have combination skin
  • If you don’t notice anything and your skin feels fine, you likely have normal skin

 2. The Blotting Test

Find out how much oil your face produces by using a blotting sheet on various areas of your face.

    • If the sheet feels very oily or you noticed that oil was absorbed from all over your face, you likely have oily skin
    • If little or no oil was absorbed, you likely have dry skin
    • If oil was mainly absorbed from your forehead and/or nose, you likely have combination skin
    • If the oil distribution felt even and minimal, you likely have normal skin
